KWDT has since inception supported women into income generating activities, first among KWFDA to acquire fishing boats and other gear to provision of animals, credit, training and now to acquisition of rain water harvesting tanks to enhance increased access to safe clean water and improved sanitation and hygiene at households.

Declining fish stocks in Lake Victoria, due to export oriented production, resulted in decreased incomes, unemployment and food and nutritional insecurity in the fisher communities as they are deprived of their main sources of income and protein.

The most vulnerable group being women owing to the increasing number of female headed households in the fishing communities due to HIV/AIDS related death, migration of the productive members in the family in search of alternative modes of employment aggravating socio economic segregation that society has placed on women for so long.

There is a need of diversification of economic activities and creation of social / development groups to lobby for improved and increased access to social services.

Texts founders of the organization:

The organization started way back in 1996 to enhance women’s capacity to engage in fishing; a male dominated activity for improved livelihoods further diversifying into alternative economic activities to reduce dependency on fisheries resource for sustainable development.
