Food systems and sustainable channels

 

April 3rd 2009 : First preparatory Forum of the multi-actors of sustainable banana industry which took place at the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) headquarters in Rome. Contact : Alistair SMITH.

 

March 19th 2009: Sucre Ethique participated in a meeting in Brussels organised by Ecole Politechnique of Lausanne of the Roundtable for sustainable Biofuels (RSB) on the sustainability of agrofuels criteria. The encounter called up many NGO, enterprises and university graduates. More.

Training of social leaders

 

Global Café : Setting on Terre Citoyenne website of 21 videos realised at the encounter of December 2008 at “Université de la mer” (Chili) on the training of social leaders. These are exchanges on a coffee about various experiences on social leaders training. Watch.

Rural and fishing organisations

 

Contag Congress, took place on the 10th of march 2009 in Brasilia with a total attendance of 3.145 people, out of which 2.604 were union representatives and many other invitees plus 27 international observers. During this tenth congress, Alberto Broch was elected president of the CONTAG with 97% of the voters. This congress was sorted out like an important moment of democraty. Participation to the 28th Session of COFI-FAO (Special FAO committee on fishing held in Rome from the 2nd to the 6th of March 2009). The Regional Permanent Forum for professional actors of the traditional fishing in West Africa and ADEPA attended the 28th session of the FAO-COFI fishing committee. They were represented by Mrs Seynabou NDOYE, spokesperson of the Forum and M. Charles BAKUNDAKWITA, executive Secretary of ADEPA. Meeting of the Top rural Organisations of  the Centre-West zone of the Gulf of Guinea  (Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Liberia). From the 2nd to the 3rd of April 2009 in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). The objective of the encounter  aimed somehow to put at the same  level rural organizations of the Centre West zone of the Golf of Guinea (Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Togo) and those of the CSRP (Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone).

  

 

Even though the G8 Summit of April 2009 have taken like theme of discussion agricultural and food security, African organisations networks think on their part that it is left to them to give analysis and suggestions of the agricultural producers as far as this theme is concerned. They produced a document on a workshop held in Rome. Consult the document.

 

Management of natural resources

 

Regional encounter of the Rif of APMM. Tisghnasse Association (ASTITUDE) and Association des Populations des Montagnes du Monde - Section Maroc (APMM-MAROC) organized a regional encounter of Rif under the theme “Development reality of Rif mountain” on the 09th and 10th of January 2009 at Nador. More than 55 associations coming from different regions of Tanger, El Houssima, Taza, Guerssif, Oudja, Berkane and Nador participated at this encounter that targeted : 

- enlighten the actors, through various studies, on the regional development constraints,

- sensitize local associations and other actors on their role as per development and claim are concerned,

- Assort recommendations to help actors of Rif to elaborate a sustainable development through cultural, geographical, environmental and specificities of the region. APMM.  

Thursday 5th of February 2009, Conference in Sciences-Po Toulouse, organised by APMM on the theme : «  farmers of illicit crops face to international community ».

Testimonies and propositions of Bolivian producers of coca with the participation of the parliamentarian Jean Lassale, Jean Bourliaud, Alain Labrousse, Sabino Mendoza Quispe (adviser of the Bolivian minister of Agriculture) Dionicio Nunez (in charge of Cocaleros syndicate) and Reynaldo Calcia Luna (chair person of local administration Yungas). Following the Barcelona forum on this theme, this conference that witnessed the participation of more than 200 hundred students enabled explanation on the situation of coca leaf in Bolivia and the fight of cacaleros for the waive of sanction for the coca leaf at the international level.

Final declaration and first world forum website of declared illicit cultures producers. People assembled at Barcelone (Spain) from 29th to 31st of January 2009 for the First Producers Forum of Cultures Declared Illicit grouping representatives of producers from Africa, Asia and Latine America, of countries where crops declared illicit (coca trees, cannabis, and opium pavot) are generally produced, validated the common declaration, in order, singularly, to weigh on the train of the Vienne Conference organised by the United Nations, centred on this theme. You can find the final declaration and other syntheses of workshops enriched with debates of participants on the website realised by Almedio with the whole systematisation of the Forum.

 

Food safety and sovereignty face to the world food system crisis

 

Creation of a study group on African Agricultures at the Polytechnic University of Valence. This group constitutes a sub-group of the GEI (International Economy Group of the Polytechnic of Valence). The objective of this group is multiple: on the one hand to regularly publish information concerning agriculture, the rural world, food sector and on the other hand to publish the researches carried out by members of the group or other researchers. This group has just published a translation in Spanish of the book of Professor Mark Dufumier. Visible on website TC.

This study was coordinated by Ibase and the Polis Institute. Consult

Edition of the review Tierra Number 14 by CERAI, entitled « material sensible” (group of audio and visual instruments conceived, elaborated and used in order to awaken and sensitize the public…).

In March, Sucre Ethique published an article in the professional review “Opiniões” of the Brazilian sugar-alcohol sector. The article elaborates on the theme of agriculture as ultimate refuge of capitalism pointing out the risks of speculation linked to agro fuels and to the sugar market. See article.

« Pêche durable » Manual. Following the workshop « Fish & Catering Sector” organised jointly by RFA and Risteco (PFH, France, November 2008) a manual “Pêche durable” was presented at the occasion of the meeting at Slowfish (Gènes, Italie, 17-20 April 2009). This book initially published in French will later on be transposed into many languages (English, Italian …) It integrates in the collection of (Cahiers de Risteco) which already has many publications relating to collective restoration.

From westernization to globalisation (quarterly publication « Altermondes, N° 16 of December 2008 - February 2009) : article by Albert Chen Lichuan on the issue of Chinese modernity. Bulletin ADEPA Infos n° 14, November - December 2008 – January 2009. (In February beginning 2009). This issue gives a resume on activities realised by ADEPA in 2008. It later comes to activities realised during the last quarter of 2008 as well as of ADEPA as to the fishers and partners Organisations.

Report on the participation of ADEPA to the Coastal and Sea Forum of PRCM (Program for the Safeguarding of Coastal and Sea resources in West Africa March 2009). This report points out the interventions of ADEPA and the delegates of the Permanent Regional Forum during the Coastal and Sea Forum (17-21 February 2007 in Bissau). It formulates recommendations made during the fishermen’s Forum. This document is available on the ADEPA website.

The RFA website (Alliance for responsible fishing) is online. The website is said to be educative to consumers and to actors implicated in the fishing sector.

It offers a precise and neat definition :

- prerogatives and responsibilities of individual link of the chain in the fishing field

– environmental, social and economic criteria of a responsible fishing. 

 

Agenda

30th of April 2009 at Conakry (Guinea). In the sphere of the project “Empowering of capacities of Rural Organisations and NGO in the local fishing activities in West African marine eco regions”. ADEPA and the WWF have agreed to combine  networks initiated by them (Permanent Regional Forum and Local Fishing Organisations) to reach a high level of synergy  in their interventions.

4 – 8 Mai 2009, Alimenterra will organise a workshop visit with Francophones in Italy to discover experiences and actors of the sustainable collective restoration  in  Emilia-Romagna et le Marche regions. Contact : Clive Peckham.
