The impact of armed conflicts on rural organizations

CHAD

How to protect and preserve the assets of development of rural agriculture in a country in conflict

Bearers of the initiative:

Conseil National de Concertation des Producteurs Ruraux du Tchad (CNCPRT)

From their independence trough the present time, Chad’s inhabitants have lived under a constant uncertainty due to the successive armed conflicts.  This environment prevents them from amassing wealth and/or goods to develop their activities and fight poverty back.  Thus war and specially a recent destructive insanity, both have had a smashing economic impact on Chad’s cities and rural sectors.

Consequently, producers have seen their crops plundered and burnt and so have the vegetable, fruit, and fish stocks on the market and trade business.  CNCPRT office based there was partially plundered during this last war, as well.

On the other hand, many peasants left their houses to live in different places within Chad itself or abroad, looking for shelter.

The Chad’s war poses a deep meditation on the Chad peasant’s future.  CNCPRT does have an essential role to play in behalf of the rural producer interests and peace reconstruction.  Thus, the Council ought to reactivate its activities the soonest to prevent fear and uncertainty seize its members.

To do this, we should rapidly:

  • schedule an administrative council meeting in order to assess the situation and elaborate a work program
  • organize a countrywide tour to ponder over the matter with our members
  • to prepare a pondering workshop at a national level to elaborate a plan of action based on heritage and priorities according to the ongoing reality.
