The dehusking of cashew nut: an opportunity for the populations of the north of the Ivory Coast

IVORY COAST

Program aiming to the fight against poverty and the return to peace

Bearers of the initiative:

Rongead

This program, currently in course, began in January 2007 and last 4 years. It rises from a long activity and presence of RONGEAD in Ivory Coast and succeeds the program “Professional structuring of the cashew nut sector: a sustainable contribution to peace” cofinanced by the EC.

The identified global objectives are:

  • to fight against poverty
  • to promote equality and the autonomy of women
  • to ensure an economic and social development while preserving the natural resources
  • to facilitate integration of vulnerable populations  to a worldwide economy, in particular through the promotion of the equitable trade
  • to contribute to the creation of added-value by the local transformation
  • to contribute to peace in Ivory Coast by durably improving the living conditions of the women and the young people whose socio-economic situation is affected by the conflict.

The specific objective of the program is to support the creation of income-generating activities for vulnerable populations by the sustainable development of the sector " artisanal dehusking of cashewnut".

The main activities of the project are:

  • Training to artisanal dehusking: technique, hygiene and quality, economic and financial management
  • training to design, manufacture and maintenance of the dehusking material
  • economic organization of the sector: structuring the offer, analyzing markets and strategies to promote exportations
  • contribution to the public/private dialogue for the development of the agro-alimentary sector of the north of Ivory Coast
