Agro-fuels, a global issue for development

WORLD

A comparative study of the policies of major global economic centres and their impact on developing countries

Bearers of the initiative:

Rongead

This theme explored, working within the RONGEAD (www.rongead.org)
and one of its North American partners (Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy), focuses on policies for development of agro-fuels (biofuels) of the various global economic centres. The pressure exerted by the significant increase in oil prices catalyse the development of alternative energy focusing, for transport, agro-fuels. This situation comes to combine the socio-economic problems in the agricultural sector in developed countries and transition economies (pole Sino-Indian) and is, indeed, relayed by policies clearly displayed for their development. The advantage of the rapid progress of agro-fuels is seriously put into question, especially since the increase is supposed to be part of a sustainable development perspective.

The ecological balance sheets are also increasingly criticized:
-Their effects are considered virtually non-existent on reducing emission of greenhouse gases and the pressure they exert on the land, especially primary forests, bogs and other areas covering a conserve biodiversity.

The collaboration of RONGEAD and IATP (and any other collaborators Asian network FPH) aims to highlight the socio-economic impacts of key environmental and development policies of agro-fuels on the development of southern countries.
It also intends to highlight the undeniable comparative advantages of the second generation of agro-fuels that allow energy production located complementary with local development strategies.

It is therefore to develop a series of comparative synthetic sheets as tools to aid the decision on agro-fuels as part of future negotiations on the subject, including the "post-Kyoto".

Did you know?

24 000 people die every year at sea on a total of 15 million full time workers working in fisheries. The FAO mainly questions the cost-cutting and the poor conditions of many boats. The most dangerous fisheries are located in the North-East Pacific, the Northern Atlantic, and the North Sea.
