Initiative

Developing a national network of grain producers for upgrading the farming, construction of a fair market and retrieving food sovereignty

MEXICO

National campaign for food sovereignty "Without corn there is no country, and without beans neither. Put Mexico in thy mouth"

Bearers of the initiative:

ANEC

To cope, on the one hand, government policies and multinational companies who wish to leave the agro-food market in the hands of large Mexican and transnational companies, who promote re-concentration of land, water, forest resources and other land resources now owned by small farmers and their rural communities, and secondly, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), it is 15 years since we've given the impetus to the self-organization of small producers of basic grains in Mexico (maize, beans, wheat, sorghum, rice).

Helping them to face the opening of trade, privatization of the economy, deregulation of agricultural markets and move towards an organised marketing of crops and construction of new public policies for the farms based on Mexican sovereignty and food and nutrition security, upgrading of small-scale agriculture, the rights of farmers and consumers.

Our work takes place at three interrelated levels:

  • Peasant control and management of supply through local organizations, regional and national networks to defend the best prices and ensure the marketing of crops, the acquisition of materials, access to financing, technical assistance, technological innovation, but also be better armed to face the big corporations that dominate the Mexican agricultural market
  • Preparation and propose of alternatives public policies for the countryside, strategies for action before the Parliament and the Federal Executive
  • Building alliances with urban areas; resistance to economic models, agricultural, commercial force on the international field; encouragement of alternative proposals.

Relations with other allies:

a) National Council of Peasant Organizations (CONOC): coordination with 7 national networks of specialized organizations (café, forestry, rural micro-financers, etc.).

b) National Campaign for Food Sovereignty and reactivation of the campaign (against the NAFTA, the transgenic maize, monopolies, rising food prices, advertising for junk food, etc.): This campaign includes many environmental NGOs , defence of human rights, consumer protection, local development, etc., peasant organizations and scientists, academics, artists, intellectuals, and so on.

c) National Movement for Food Sovereignty and Energetics, workers' rights and democratic freedoms: broad coalition of peasant organizations, unions and citizens

d) The movement of indigenous and peasant organizations of Meso-America (MOICAM)

e) International Movement Via Campesina, and so on.

Elements of agenda:

  • National Campaign against the NAFTA, transgenic and for a new policy for the countryside, including organising a national referendum and, possibly, a national farming strike: March-December
  • Strengthening of ANEC and CONOC
  • Tri-national campaign (Mexico, USA, Canada) against the NAFTA and ASPAN
  • Strengthening the MOICAM.
