Initiative To create added value in the sesame and cashew nut sector
The rural populations of the saharian zones of Burkina Faso are confronted with economic and ecological problems. The ecological difficulties are related to the saharian climate, the deforestation and the brittleness of the grounds. The economic difficulties are mainly related to the crisis of cotton and the food difficulties. The development of country arboriculture and the annual cultures of revenue (pures or associated) are possible strategies of diversification. Burkina Faso has agro-ecological zones favorable to the production of cashew nut and sesame. The cashew nut and sesame sectors represent complementary sources of revenue for the vulnerable populations of the rural areas. Sesame has a potential of significant development to Burkina Faso, being a not very demanding plant, easily integrated in the agricultural calendars and which may be valuable for export. The request of the international market is growing and certain contracts of purchase in Burkina Faso are not filled. The cashew nut (cashew nut) also has a potential of diversification of the incomes, although the current production of Burkina Faso remains weak and little structured. Plantations exist in the target areas of the action but the requirements of the international market are not controlled by the producers. The cashew tree is a rustic tree which may be valuable economically, this is why it is regarded as a tree adapted to the economic development of underprivileged zones and was introduced into the zones of raised savannas in several countries of West Africa. The global objectives of this action are:
The specific objective of the action is to support the diversification and the security of the income of underprivileged rural populations of Burkina Faso by the creation of added-value in the sesame and cashew nut sectors in a protected environment. |
