Did you know?

David Wallinga, M.D of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, wrote an article showing the role of U.S. agriculture policy in promoting the overproduction of certain farm commodities like corn and soybeans. These cheap commodities have been converted into calorie-rich but nutrient-poor snacks, sweets and sweetened beverages that have led to an excess of daily calories for all Americans, children and adults alike. For that reason, Dr. Wallinga calls U.S. farm policy a “cheap calorie” policy. Source: http://www.iatp.org/

Sustainability of world food systems: a major stake for humankind

At present, developing countries have to face the increasing necessity of food quantity products in order to answer the needs of a part of their inhabitants living in state of undernourishment. Tomorrow, with the increase of world population and the over-bid of the energy cost, the quantity of food products derived from farming and fishery will be still an issue on the agenda.

Both developing countries as well as the developed ones, have to face undernourishment problems. Part of the population consumes in sufficient quantity, that is to say, according to the number of integrated calories intake in their daily food diet. But they have often a lack at the food diet level of micro-nutriments (indispensable vitamins to their physical and mental health).

At the same time, in many developing and developed countries, the number of the over-nourished people affected by overweight and obesity increases quickly, due to modifications in food diet and to a physical activity reduction. This creates additional costs to ensure health. These costs are going to increase exponentially in the coming years.

The whole planet is also confronted to environmental degradation problems, frequently caused by intensive farming, predatory fishing practices of the halieutic resources, food industry companies and distribution circuits that consume in quantity non renewable natural resources.

The main problem in food systems sustainability is based on the improvement of food quality, human health and environment safety, this is one of the biggest challenges that humankind is confronted to.
