Did you know?

David Wallinga, M.D of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, wrote an article showing the role of U.S. agriculture policy in promoting the overproduction of certain farm commodities like corn and soybeans. These cheap commodities have been converted into calorie-rich but nutrient-poor snacks, sweets and sweetened beverages that have led to an excess of daily calories for all Americans, children and adults alike. For that reason, Dr. Wallinga calls U.S. farm policy a “cheap calorie” policy. Source: http://www.iatp.org/

International Seminar: food sovereignty, global or partial solution facing food challenges?

Aigua Clara (Alberic- España), una experiencia de soberanía alimentaria

Valencia - Spain. 7 al 10 June 2010

A critical perspective of food sovereignty as a key issue for future development.

This meeting is a collaborative effort of CERAI (www.cerai.org) and the Sustainable Earth Alliance (www.terre-citoyenne.org). Both organizations are working from different approaches to the problems linked to agriculture, nutrition, rural development, fisheries and the training of leaders.

The global food scenario presents two main challenges in the XXI century. The first is to feed the entire world population and in the future. The second challenge is how environmental nature feed the world without contributing to climate change?

The answers to these challenges require joint capabilities at multiple levels. Agriculture, fisheries, livestock, hunting and gathering are complex activities that combine natural factors (land, water, air), economic (credit, capital), technical factors (production models), social factors (agricultural workforce , distribution of the population), cultural factors (food culture) and political factors (legislation).

Is the global food sovereignty a global or partial response to these challenges?

The Valencia meeting allowed the analysis of the various elements of proposal, weaknesses and strengths since 1996, launching the concept of food sovereignty. The meeting allowed several joint initiatives of the Sustainable Earth Alliance in agriculture, fisheries and food.
